NCDOT awards contract to create highway construction and trades academy in Morganton

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Office of Civil Rights has recently awarded a contract to the Olive Hill Community Economic Development Corporation, Inc. to establish a regional Highway Construction and Trades Academy in Morganton.

The Morganton News-Herald reports that the acadamy will provide an eight-week training program to meet the needs of contractors awarded NCDOT projects.

The training includes job skills success and hands-on technical training, leading to civil construction opportunities in occupations including equipment operator, laborer, carpenter, truck driver, iron worker, cement mason and flagger.

The academy is a blend of classroom and hands-on training where individuals will learn tool use, equipment operation, safety, and receive guidance on how to find, land and maintain a career in highway heavy construction.

NCDOT currently has two major projects, estimated at $684.3 million, in the planning and development stages in the Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton market area, creating contract opportunities for construction firms and employment for roughly 19,500 construction jobs.

Interested candidates can contact (828) 433-8075 x 244 or 255 to register.
