$3.7M upgrade closes World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Design and Construction Report staff writer

The National Park Service has closed the World War II Memorial as construction gets underway on a nearly $3.7 million project to modernize fountain and lighting infrastructure at the National Mall site.

The project includes installation of new in-fountain lighting systems to replace equipment that is no longer operational, along with replacement of non-functioning exterior in-ground lighting used to illuminate the memorial’s state and territory pillars. The scope also includes associated electrical and mechanical upgrades required to support safe, reliable operation.

Work is scheduled for completion by May 15, subject to weather and site conditions. The memorial will remain closed throughout construction to ensure public safety. Fencing and construction barriers have been installed, and pedestrian circulation around the site has been modified.

According to the National Park Service, the work is intended to address aging infrastructure and restore nighttime visibility while maintaining compliance with federal historic preservation standards. The project is part of a broader program to rehabilitate and modernize fountains and related infrastructure at National Park Service sites across Washington, D.C.

The National Park Service said it regrets the temporary closure and advised visitors to follow posted signage and directions from park staff and contractors while work is underway.
