Construction starts on Raleigh’s tallest residential tower

Construction is underway on what will become Raleigh’s tallest residential building. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held last week at the site of Highline Glenwood, a $200 million luxury tower set to transform the city’s skyline.“Projects like Highline Glenwood don’t come along every day,” said Randy Finchera, vice president of commercial services for Barnhill Building Group, the project’s general contractor. “This is going to be a generational project with a major impact on downtown Raleigh.”

The 37-story tower is designed to incorporate the historic Creamery Building and will include more than 300 apartments along with retail and dining spaces, bringing a mixed-use experience to one of Raleigh’s most popular entertainment districts. Amenities will include a pool, outdoor kitchen, firepits and a yoga lawn.

“This is a great addition to downtown,” said Bill King, president and CEO of Raleigh Downtown Alliance. “Residential growth has been a key part of our resilience and our recovery coming out of COVID.”Highline Glenwood will surpass The Eastern in North Hills to become the tallest residential building in Raleigh.

“Even from the ninth floor, you’ll have great views of the city,” said Jason Davis, managing director at Turnbridge Equities, the project’s developer. “And the higher you go, the better the view.”

Turnbridge Equities purchased the site in March 2020 and the project faced multiple challenges including rising interest rates, inflation, and escalating construction costs.

“It’s been one challenge after another,” Davis said. “But I’m proud of our team. We stuck with it and worked with our partners to bring the project to construction.”

Highline Glenwood is part of a broader redevelopment of the site, which occupies a full city block in the thriving Glenwood South neighborhood. In addition to preserving the historic Creamery building, the project includes plans for two additional multi-story structures featuring office, residential, and retail spaces, along with structured parking. Streetscape improvements and outdoor gathering areas will further enhance the user experience.

Completion is expected in 2028.
