Gilead Sciences has started construction on a new 180,000-sq. ft. Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing Technical Development Center at its Foster City headquarters, part of the company’s $32 billion U.S. building plan through 2030.

The five-story facility will serve as a hub for research, technical development, and manufacturing, supporting Gilead’s work in virology, oncology, and inflammation. It is designed with flexible pilot labs, advanced digital systems, autonomous robotics, and real-time monitoring to speed technology transfer and the development of next-generation biologics.

Gilead says the project is expected to create more than 3,000 direct and indirect jobs nationwide and generate over $43 billion in economic value. The new center is part of a broader expansion at the Foster City campus, which also includes a new research building and a biologics manufacturing facility.

“This new facility is part of our vision for delivering next-generation therapies,” said Gilead CEO Daniel O’Day. “It will generate thousands of American jobs and help drive U.S. leadership in global biopharma innovation.”

California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis praised the project, saying it strengthens supply chains, supports domestic biomanufacturing, and helps keep the U.S. at the forefront of life-saving innovation.

The center is expected to accelerate Gilead’s biologics capabilities and reinforce the company’s role as a leader in U.S.-based biopharmaceutical research and production.
