A significant milestone was reached last week in the ongoing $1.3 billion reconstruction and modernization of Interstate 80 with the completion of multiple key bridges, part of the Rebuild Illinois capital program aimed at revitalizing the state’s infrastructure.
“We’re building a better future for our region by investing in the infrastructure that families and businesses rely on,” Gov. J.B. Pritzker said in a sstatement. “The completion of these bridges, along with the opening of the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Resource Center, demonstrates our commitment to modernizing I-80 and creating economic opportunities for our communities.”
The project includes a $96 million investment in new bridge structures over Hickory Creek, Richards Street, and Rowell Avenue/Canadian National Railroad, which will enhance safety and capacity along the vital I-80 corridor. While the new bridges will maintain two lanes in each direction for now, they are designed to accommodate future expansion to three lanes.
In a move to foster inclusivity in contracting opportunities, Pritzker announced the opening of a new Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Resource Center at 858 Center Court, Unit A, in Shorewood. This center aims to assist minority- and female-owned businesses in navigating the certification process and accessing contracting opportunities, eliminating the need to travel to Chicago or Schaumburg for assistance.
“An investment in infrastructure is an investment in people. These improvements will benefit this vital area of the state for decades to come, supporting local businesses and creating good-paying jobs,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman.
Since the project commenced, significant progress has been made, including the rebuilding of bridges on Shepley Road and Wheeler Avenue, and the reconstruction of interchanges at Houbolt Road and U.S. 30. Ground has also been broken this spring to widen and rebuild 11 mainline miles of I-80, further enhancing the region’s logistics and freight capabilities.
Upcoming plans include new interchanges with I-55 and Larkin Avenue, set to begin construction next year, as well as additional interchanges and bridge projects anticipated to start in 2026. The entire project is expected to be substantially completed by the end of 2028.
State Senator Rachel Ventura (D-Joliet) noted the positive impact of the project, stating, “This is fantastic news for residents and tourists in Joliet and surrounding areas. The Rebuild Illinois initiative is not just about infrastructure; it’s about providing opportunities for diverse businesses.”
State Representative Larry Walsh (D-Elwood) echoed this sentiment, highlighting the bipartisan efforts that have made these improvements possible and the importance of inclusivity in the contracting process.
As part of the Rebuild Illinois initiative, which allocates $33.2 billion over six years to modernize the state’s transportation system, these developments are part of the largest capital program in Illinois history.
