Florida Department of Transportation awards Munilla Construction Management $7.9 million bridge rehabilitation project on SRA1A in St. Lucie County

Munilla Construction Management (MCM) has been awarded a $7.9 million bridge rehabilitation contract by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to improve the SRA1A Peter J. Cobb Memorial Bridge in St. Lucie county.

Slated to commence Oct. 16, the improvements under the contract consist of bridge rehabilitation including scour protection, rubble riprap, gabions, bedding stone, pile repairs, fender system and spalled/delaminated concrete repairs, sidewalk, driveways, fencing, pedestrian/bicycle railing, replacing the existing observation walks, and observation walk lighting along State Road A1A for 0.585 miles over the Intracoastal Waterway.

The project will begin with scour protection; scour is naturally occurring, is the swift flow of water cause by tidal changes. Scour leads to the removal of sediment such as sand and gravel, of the existing channel piers. The new scour protection will be comprised of a combination of a bedding stone layer followed by rubble riprap around the piers at a depth of approximately 25 feet below the water surface. This process will also include the construction of a new fender system containing spalled, delaminated concrete repair to the existing bridge piling system.

New gabion mats will then be installed for protection of non-channel piers, new sidewalks and fencing, giving the project its finished touch. Finally, the existing observation walkway will be replaced with a new piling and deck system installation followed by a concrete pile set and cap installation placed at predetermined spaced intervals, which will contain a double-T beam system on top. This will serve as the walking surface and a rail system to tie the walkway together and allow for safe pedestrian access. The project is expected to be completed by November 2019.
