Work to upgrade San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge is nearing a key construction milestone with the completion of a suicide deterrent net.
Shimmick Construction and Danny’s Construction are completing the $211 million contract.
The physical suicide deterrent net will be 20 feet below and 20 feet out from both sides of the 1.7-mile bridge. It is made of 385,000 sq ft of marine-grade stainless steel stretched across 555 tons of steel supports.
Scope of work also includes:
- Fabricating and installing a vertical galvanized and painted steel railing on top of the existing bridge concrete railing
- Removing existing maintenance traveler system
- Fabricating, testing and installing new maintenance traveler system
