Google and Intersect Power have announced construction on the Meitner Energy Center in the Texas Panhandle, a project that will combine a new data center with more than 1 gigawatt of wind, solar and battery storage capacity.
The companies said the project, located in Gray and Roberts counties, is designed to bring computing infrastructure and renewable energy generation online simultaneously. By colocating the facilities, the companies say the data center’s electricity needs will be met by newly developed generation assets rather than requiring significant additional power from the grid.
The project will include a data center alongside wind and solar generation facilities and battery energy storage systems. Additional details about the size of the data center, investment costs and construction timeline were not disclosed.
Google said the facility will use advanced air-cooling technology to reduce water consumption, limiting water use primarily to domestic purposes such as restrooms.
“Our newest investment in Gray County deepens our partnership with Texas — a state that continues to lead with innovation and vision,” Andrew Hart, Google’s regional head of data center public affairs, said in a statement. “We are excited to become a part of the community.”
The project comes as major technology companies seek new ways to secure power supplies for growing artificial intelligence and cloud computing operations amid rising electricity demand.
Reports of the development first emerged in March, suggesting Google and Intersect were planning two large-scale projects in the Texas Panhandle, including one that could support a 3-gigawatt campus and another capable of hosting a 1-gigawatt campus.
The Meitner Energy Center builds on a partnership launched in 2024 between Google and Intersect Power to develop renewable energy and battery storage projects alongside new data centers across the United States.
In November 2025, the companies announced their first joint project, pairing a data center with Intersect Power’s Quantum Clean Energy Project in Haskell County, Texas. That development includes 640 megawatts of solar generation and 1.3 gigawatt-hours of battery storage and is expected to begin operations this month.
The partnership expanded further after Alphabet, Google’s parent company, announced plans in December to acquire Intersect Power in a deal reportedly valued at $4.75 billion. The acquisition closed in March.
