Micron Technology and the federal government have announced a deal that includes $6.1 billion in grants to build plants in Central New York and Idaho, the White House announced and that means officials construction will start in fall 2025 at the 1,400-acre site off Route 31 in Clay.
Micron is now eligible for up to $4.6 billion in grants for Clay and $1.5 billion in grants for the Boise expansion.
The Commerce Department said the company will have to meet a series of milestones in Central New York and Idaho before receiving the federal grants, which would be paid out in increments as those milestones are met. Details were not released to the media.
The project in New York will be the largest expansion in company history, with four plants being built in the town of Clay over 20 years.
“Syracuse’s surge accelerated today with the $6.1 billion agreement finalized between Micron and the Department of Commerce,’ said Syracuse Mayor Walsh. “This deal represents not just an investment in American manufacturing and national security; it’s an investment in our community, our workforce and our future. Micron’s investment solidifies Central New York’s role as a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing and paves the way for unprecedented economic growth and job creation.
“It’s a testament to what our region can achieve when federal, state, local and private partners work together toward a shared vision.”
