NCDOT releases 10-year State Transportation Improvement plan

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has released its draft for the State Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP) for 2017-2027.

The program, last updated in 2015, “identifies the construction funding and scheduling for transportation projects at the state level over a 10-year period.

“Although federal law requires the plan to be updated every four years, the department proactively updates it every two years to ensure it accurately reflects the state’s current financial situation,” NDOT says.

The Draft 2018-2027 State Transportation Improvement Program is made up of 1,421 projects, including 298 non-highway projects (e.g. aviation, public transit, rail, etc.), in every county across the state.

Also included are 376 interstate maintenance and bridge projects and 61 safety projects that are prioritized under what is called “alternate criteria.” Alternate criteria projects undergo a separate prioritization process.

NDOT says: “Now that the draft plan has been released, NCDOT will hold a public comment period this spring to seek input on the document. The Board of Transportation is expected to approve the Final 2018-2027 State Transportation Improvement Program in June 2017.”
