The Raleigh Urban Design Center (UDC) and the Dix Park Conservancy invites the general public, government officials and industry professionals to participate in a free lecture titled “The Power of Parks to Transform Communities & Individuals: An Evening with Gil Peñalosa.”
Slated for Dec. 6 at Room 305, Raleigh Convention Center, the lecture is a part of the city government’s 2017 UDC Talks. It will include topics such as inclusivity, ecology, access, arts and culture, history, transportation, economic development and connectivity; and aims to educate attendees on local design issues.
Speaking at the lecture is multi-awarded urban planner Guillermo “Gil” Peñalosa. Aside from being a chair of the board at World Urban Parks, he is also the founder of 8 80 Cities, a non-profit organization that contributes to creation of “vibrant cities” and “healthy communities.” It operates on a philosophy that a successful city is one that benefits both an 8 year old and an 80 year old.
Peñalosa’s official website describes him as a professional who “is passionate about cities for all people.” Through his talks and the services offered by his firm Gil Peñalosa & Associates, the urban planner has advised and inspired decision makers in over 200 countries to create sustainable communities.
His design focuses on development of parks and streets. Peñalosa also advocates sustainable mobility, including walking, riding bicycles, using public transit, and the use of new cars.
Registrations and reservations are not required. Attendees allowed to bring dinner to the talk.
