St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is planning a $50 million expansion at its O’Fallon medical campus to enhance healthcare services in the area, President Chris Klay said during a recent O’Fallon City Council committee meeting.
The expansion, seven years after the hospital opened, includes a new 70,000-sq. ft. medical office building featuring a 20,000-sq. ft. ambulatory surgical treatment center. This three-story facility is proposed to be built adjacent to Green Mount Road, north of the hospital’s main entrance. If approved, construction is expected to start in the spring of 2025, with operations beginning in 2026.
Klay highlighted the need for expansion, stating that operating rooms are currently exceeding capacity and demand for services is rising across all departments.
“Before relocating to O’Fallon, we averaged 70 emergency department visits per day,” he said. “Now, that number has increased to 140 to 160.”
The new surgical center will comprise four operating rooms and two procedure rooms. St. Elizabeth’s has filed a certificate of need application with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, which is scheduled to review the proposal on Jan. 28, 2025.
If the expansion receives state approval, construction could commence in the spring of 2025 and be completed by late 2026. Hospital officials are confident the project will significantly improve access to high-quality surgical services for local patients.
