Wayne J. Griffin Electric highlights workforce development with 20th annual apprentice competition

Special to Design and Construction Report

HOLLISTON, Mass. — Addressing the ongoing need for skilled labor in the construction industry, Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc. recently hosted its 20th Apprentice Competition to foster growth and education among its trainees.

The multi-state event was held at the electrical subcontractor’s headquarters in Holliston, Massachusetts, as well as at regional offices in Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. Apprentices competed in teams, rotating through a diverse array of stations to earn points based on their performance, knowledge, and teamwork.

The competition tested practical construction proficiencies through pipe bending, lighting controls, and pipe rack challenges. The event also incorporated safety and knowledge trivia, alongside collaborative challenges like an indoor maze and a Race Car Rally.

Aligning with the company’s culture of giving back, the competition featured a community service station where participants assembled personal care packages. Griffin Electric will donate several hundred of these packages to veterans’ organizations across New England and the Southeast. The event concluded with an awards ceremony and luncheon to recognize the top-scoring teams, who received medals and prizes.

The competition also served as a celebration of National Apprenticeship Week. For over three decades, Griffin Electric’s four-year, in-house Apprenticeship Training Program has provided a debt-free pathway for individuals entering the construction trades. The federally recognized and state-approved program helps students obtain electrical and telecom licensure.

The company also offers apprentices and mechanics the opportunity to travel for temporary assignments, exposing them to a wider range of projects and leadership experiences.

Wayne J. Griffin Electric has operated since 1978 and employs nearly 1,500 workers. Engineering News-Record (ENR) recently ranked the firm 26th in its 2025 national listing of the top 50 electrical contractors, as well as placing it at the number one spot in New England and Massachusetts.
