Wellington earns ‘Florida Green’ gold level certification

The Village of Wellington has recently been presented the Gold Level of certification as a “Florida Green” local government by the Florida Green Building Coalition, the leading certifier of green projects in the state.

After meeting the organization’s comprehensive list of criteria and earning minimum level of points, Wellington joined 91 other local governments in Florida that have been certified or registered as an official “Florida Green” government. The award was given early in October by FGBC Executive Director C.J. Davila.

In the past several years, Wellington has been pushing towards sustainability by modifying and building infrastructures to impact the locale in a positive way. Officials and agencies also worked on other key areas such as transportation, water, natural resources, energy and recycling to meet the needs of residents in a sustainable manner.

“Sustainability is inherent in Wellington’s vision and mission and in its role as stewards of the public’s resources and trust,” said FGBC president Jeremy Nelson. “The gold level of certification as ‘Florida Green’ is a special and significant accomplishment for Wellington.

Moreover, Jim Barnes, assistant city manager of Wellington, said that receiving the award meant that their “conscientious green building efforts” into making a more sustainable Florida has been recognized.

The FGBC’s Green Local Government Certification is a performance-based programs. Since it is ran by a local organization, they follow standards that are climate specific to Florida’s topography and hot-humid environment. It is also the only program of its kind that is endorsed by the Florida Legislature, the Florida League of Cities and the Florida League of Mayors.

Wellington is ready to connect with regional and local partners to exchange ideas regarding global sustainability.
