The Carolinas Associated General Contractors (CAGC) Board of Directors has approved a three-year strategic plan “that concentrates on giving our members more value as we approach CAGC’s 100th anniversary in 2020,” the association has reported to its members.
The strategic plan’s vision statement says simply: “Carolinas AGC will be recognized as the trusted voice for the construction industry in the Carolinas.”
The new mission statement approved at an August CAGC board meeting is: “Carolinas AGC is the association for the construction industry in the Carolinas, bringing value to our members through networking, government relations, increased profit, job leads, meetings with owners/designers, education and training, and community development.”

The plan is the result of months of work by from CAGC’s board, chaired by Marty McKee, that included seeking member input at CAGC meetings in North and South Carolina as well as surveys on what members/prospective members want from CAGC. Directors also recently held a retreat with key staff and a consultant, Jim Thompson of Capitol Hill Management Services, Inc., to draft the plan.
“This three-year strategic plan for Carolinas AGC will take us to our 100th CAGC anniversary in 2020, helping us build upon what we do best as the trusted voice for construction in the Carolinas,” said McKee of King Asphalt, Inc.
The strategic plan is divided into four areas:
- Workforce development/education and training;
- advocacy/government affairs;
- meetings and events; and
The plan also includes numerous tactics, including expanding CAGC’s Build Your Career plan to help tackle the workforce shortage at a time when there are thousands of jobs and good careers in the construction industry in North and South Carolina.
The plan was discussed by the board before it was unanimously approved. Dave Simpson, CAGC’s president and CEO, said that staff already had met on implementing the plan and that it will be revisited and updated by the staff regularly, with quarterly progress reports to directors.
CAGC Foundation trustees also discussed the plan. The foundation oversees workforce development and research programs. “Nothing is more important than maintaining the trust that the construction industry has in Carolinas AGC,” said foundation board of trustees chair Claudia Dodgen. “One of the best ways to accomplish this is through our many committees.”
